Urachal Abnormalities

Urachal abnormalities are congenital (present from birth) or acquired conditions that affect the urachus, a structure in the abdomen that connects the bladder to the umbilicus (belly button) during fetal development. In some cases, the urachus does not close completely after birth and can result in a variety of conditions, including urachal cyst, urachal fistula, and urachal sinus. Symptoms of urachal abnormalities can include pain, swelling, and discharge in the umbilical area, as well as urinary problems. Treatment of urachal abnormalities may involve surgical removal of the affected tissue.
